This recorded webinar presentation is designed specifically for RN students, to provide them with an overview of key legal concepts and issues. The presentation examines common legal proceedings as well as several important topics, such as documentation, confidentiality and privacy, and social media. Legal case studies provide nursing students with a deeper understanding of the legal concepts.

Elaine is a Legal Advisor with the Canadian Nurses Protective Society. She received her undergraduate degree in nursing from Queen’s University at Kingston, Ontario. She worked in the infant neurosurgery unit at The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto prior to focusing on her main interest, obstetrics, which she practiced at Mount Sinai Hospital, Toronto and The Ottawa Civic Hospital. Her interest in ethical decision-making led to a position on a hospital clinical ethics committee, and from there, to a career in law after graduating from University of Ottawa’s law school. Elaine is a member of the College of Nurses of Ontario, the Registered Nurses Association of Ontario, and the Law Society of Ontario. She was on the working group that drafted the National Disclosure Guidelines published by the Canadian Patient Safety Institute. She was on the Advisory Council for Queen’s University’s Masters in Healthcare Quality.
