The Canadian Nurses Protective Society salutes and celebrates the dedication and expertise of Canada’s Nurse Practitioners (NPs) and their commitment to delivering high-quality, comprehensive care.
NPs have extensive education and nursing experience that allows them to run independent practices, serve as primary care providers, and collaborate with other healthcare professionals within multidisciplinary teams. Some key responsibilities that are part of NP work include autonomously diagnosing and treating illnesses, ordering and interpreting tests, prescribing medications, and performing medical procedures.
With their broad experience and expertise, NPs are perfectly positioned to support patients’ needs and meet the evolving demands of healthcare systems across the country. Recognition of the NP key role in enhancing access to health care services is evident in the various initiatives to support the delivery of primary care by nurse practitioners.
The federal government’s January 2025 Canada Health Act interpretation provides new direction on the inclusion of NP services provided to patients under government-funded health plans. Provincial initiatives continue to support an enhanced scope of practice for NPs and provide funding for independent primary care practice. Throughout this evolving practice landscape, CNPS professional liability protection is designed to support NP practice in their fully expanded scope whether in the public healthcare environment or in a private practice.
This National Nurse Practitioner Week, join us in showing your support for Canada’s NPs working across the country!
