Scope of Position
As a lawyer and educator, the CNPS legal counsel is primarily responsible for providing legal advice and legal representation to eligible nurses across Canada, as well as the management of litigation and legal services provided by external counsel. The CNPS legal counsel is also responsible for the delivery of risk-management education, and the analysis of new legislative initiatives, policies and new models of care delivery, as well as participation in various provincial and national consultation processes. Key Responsibilities
- Provision of legal information, advice and support to nursing professionals in connection with issues arising from their professional practice
- Review and analysis of legal documents, including proposed policies, legislation and health-care delivery models
- Provision of advice and ongoing support to nurses involved in litigation and legal proceedings
- Strategic management of the conduct of litigation and legal proceedings across Canadian jurisdictions
- Documentation of legal services in accordance with applicable standards and employer policies
- Development of strategies to promote and support safe care delivery practices and a safe practice environment
Other Responsibilities
- Development and presentation of educational modules, workshops, and lectures on professional obligations and legal issues relevant to nursing
- Drafting of articles for publication on various health law topics relevant to nursing
- Research and provision of legal opinions relating to various corporate issues
- Representing the CNPS on external committees and working groups
Requirements
- Law degree from a Canadian university
- Licence to practise law in a Canadian province or territory
- Experience in health law and litigation
- Experience working with health-care professionals
- Ability and willingness to relocate to Ottawa

- A minimum of 5 years of practice in health law litigation
- Superior oral and written communication skills
- Excellent interpersonal skills
- Highly developed analytical skills, critical thinking and organizational skills
- Ability to travel
Desirable Qualifications and skills
- Fluency in both official languages, written and oral
- Licence to practise law from the Barreau du Québec
- Nursing baccalaureate and broad nursing experience
- Registration or eligibility for registration as a registered nurse or nurse practitioner in a Canadian province of territory
